Using another of Shopsmith's Unique Capabilities
SHOP NOTES: Thanks to everyone who offered their suggestion for how I might fix the 4' diameter redwood Shopsmith sign that I was recently gifted by Nick Cupps, the new owner of Shopsmith. A couple of you came to the same conclusion that I was planning, but it was fun to see all the suggestions. I reccomend you check out the comments on that video: ua-cam.com/video/xYG41aBd5_E/v-deo.html The video is nothing to call home about, but the comments were fun to read.

If you and your son did a 3d printing channel id watch the heck out of it. You'd be so good at it. Its all of the same fiddly alignment, maintenance, yadda yadda. I would tripple dog dare you to make the channel but now that I think about it, thats really more for the cool kids and you just may not be big enough yet. I guess you could prove me wrong...

If i was going to print that, with my limited experience, i would want to print it horizontally so the layer lines were in line with the rotation. You could get more torsional flex that way and increase the shear strength. I would think in this instance you would want to engineer your teeth as the week link. You can also print with nylon if you have an enclosure and the right printer. I haven't done it but i can say pretty confidently that pla is not the answer. This is all once again coming from an active noob in the grand scheme of things. Someone smarter than me can figure this out but it will require hundreds of dollars in equipment and tons of learning curve. Now that I think about it, it sounds right up a shosmithers alley. :)

Hey Scott I’ve messaged you a few time and you’ve given me some great info. I recently got a Total shop on Marketplace and I’ve been using the Lathe. @@user-qi1oq2uj7j What’s been failing, the screws or the wood? As for chucks, it all depends on your budget. Some of the top of the line chucks would be the One Way Stronghold: amzn.to/3xPd1GM or the One Way Talon: amzn.to/3xVFPx5 which is a smaller chuck. Both of these would require an adapter like this one: amzn.to/4buNWOV. There are several inexpensive knock-offs available, and I own a couple. The Wen is fine for getting started amzn.to/4buNWOV

The idea is the same Kiekaffer Mercury had - OMC used a shear pin on the propeller shaft. Ok - but imagine hitting anything that would cause the pin to break and you’re out in rough water, miles or worse yards from land, you’ve gotta remove the propeller nut, you’re in salt water - basically you’re toast. Mercury developed a rubber hub in the propeller that would twist, slip under duress. It worked, works. I know. I hit many deadheads, sandbars, chunks of ice. The beauty was even low rpm it would slip. No more broken propeller blades, no loss of life due to a measly shear pin.

Hi Scott, I’m replacing my tires and watched your video on how you did yours. In the Comments and Cheap Shots you talked about different types of liquids that might help remove the old tire and glue residue after you get the old tires off. I ordered some brass wire wheels and the light you suggested (I’m going to really like that!). In the meantime I got to thinking about the lacquer thinner you used and decided to try it on my own. I clamped my wheel in my vice with a rag to protect it and absorb the thinner. Then I used a green scrub pad and just drizzled the thinner around the wheel. I just kept repeating that every couple of minutes for about 15 minutes. At that point the glue would wipe right off. The tire residue that was left had turned hard and would pop right off also. Try that next time on an area and don’t get in a hurry the thinner just needs time to break down the glue. I love your videos! BTW you really need to get some heat in that new shop, lol. Almost forgot, I used 1 inch tongue depressors cut at an angle for scrapers.
